Meet the Team!

Dr. Hailey Bertrand-Sluman, DVM

Hailey is a veterinarian and owner of Parkside Animal Hospital, located in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. (approx 3 hours north of Toronto). She graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2008 and has been practising in small animal medicine ever since. It was at OVC that she found her love of greyhounds. "They were our teaching animals. The school rescued grey hounds from the track in the US, fixed them up, seeing to their every medical need and then kept from for 8 months to teach students non invasive procedures like physical exams. Students were responsible for all of their care, walks and love. I fell head over heals for my group's greyhound, a handsome boy named Pippin but needed a smaller dog in my life. I visited a local CKC dog show and found whippets! The stars aligned and I was pointed in the direction of Jenny McCartney (of McCartney's Whippets) who had two male puppies; one of whom became the dog off my heart, Eddie (Lorricbrook Kindred Confusion). I count myself beyond lucky that Jenny, who has been breeding the top whippets in Canada for generations, has become my mentor and friend and has shared her incredible treasures with me and has entrusted us with genetics to die for."

Dr. Hailey, through her love of whippets has developed a special interest in canine reproduction, including frozen semen, TCAI and c-sections. When not at the clinic she can be found at home with Briar and Chris, or at the barn with the horses. She enjoys competing in the hunter world with her new partner Eduardo, a German warmblood gelding!

Chris Sluman

Chris is tired. He is also a farrier: shoeing horses for a living.

Briar Sluman

Briar, born into a whippet and horse family in 2018, through no choice of her own, has every intention of following in her mom's footsteps and becoming a veterinarian. She is the family leader in coming up with new ways to socialize the puppies and when we have a litter she can be found endlessly with them except when forced to sleep. She has enjoyed taking both Johnny and Andie in the junior handling ring and plans to continue the family tradition of showing and breeding. We think Briar says it best "I just love that they will play with me outside and run around and then come inside and I can cuddle them!"
